The Best Self-Empting Vacuums

Robot vacuums can be a great option to keep your floors clean. However, they come with tiny dustbins that have to be empty manually after every cleaning session. High-end models come with self-emptying bases, which eliminate this step, allowing for an effortless experience.

1. IRobot Roomba S9+

iRobot was the first to introduce self-emptying robots using its Roomba i7. It's now elevated the technology to a whole new level with the s9+. This flagship model is expensive, but it also has the best performance of any robot vacuum we've tested. It also comes with improvements that other brands can only envy.

It first collects dirt in its Clean Base. Then, it emptys that into a large dust bag that you throw away every 60 days. This is an excellent option for those who prefer to keep their home clean without having to touch it, but still want to have peace of mind knowing their home is clean of germs and allergens.

The s9+ also features advanced corner-cleaning capabilities that allow it closer to walls than earlier models could, and it's more adept in spot cleaning, too. The application will return to a particular area when it senses it requires more attention. If the area is particularly dirty, the s9 will return to it with a stronger suction until all the dirt has been removed.

The s9+ can be controlled using the app included or using Amazon Alexa (the s9+ is compatible with both), which lets you give full voice commands that include the ability to stopping, starting and pausing. You can also set a time frame for the robot to begin and self emptying vacuum stop its work or you can let it decide when it's time to return to its dock.

The s9+ does a great job on plain floors cleaning small particles like rice and larger objects like cereal effortlessly. It's also pretty good at dealing with carpets with low piles, and has strong suction even with full dirt compartments, however it's not as well on more dense carpets.

2. Roborock S7 MaxV Ultra

Roborock S7 MaxV Ultra robot vacuum and mop can sweep, detect rugs and self-clean. It is among the hand-off robotic vacuum self emptying cleaners that are currently available. This model is among the quietest we've examined. Its low-power Quiet mode creates maximum noise of 57.5 dBA. It's less discrete when it's in its highest power mode, 'Max', which produces over 80 dBA.

The S7 MaxV Ultra comes with an integrated dock that will automatically empty the robot's dustbin and refill its water tank. It's a bit more difficult to configure the X1 Omni but once you've got it configured, your robot will run on its own.

3. Shark IQ XL

The Shark IQ Robot XL has a powerful suction, and many clever features. It comes with an emptying base that is self-cleaning and maps your home's surface as it cleans for full coverage. You can control it using the SharkClean app or through voice commands using Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant. It also comes with physical boundary markers you can use to restrict its access to specific areas.

It has a basic, all-black design and feel. It is incredibly easy to put together from the box, requiring only a couple of snaps to join the included side brushes and the charging dock. Its dirt compartment is a bit small, though, so it is likely to have to empty it quite often.

In tests, the IQ Robot XL quickly responded to app controls and performed well during cleaning cycles. The app allows you to choose power modes, alter settings, and monitor the robot's current battery level. The app also has a Find Robot feature that will assist you in finding the device if it's lost.

The IQ Robot XL, like other Shark products has a powerful suction that is capable of handling dust bunnies and dog hair. The self-cleaning brushroll stops hair from sticking to the machine while it combs out debris. Its navigation module uses sensors to monitor the surrounding area as it moves, however the process isn't as extensive as those with LIDAR modules. The IQ Robot XL must run several clean cycles to map your space.

The Shark IQ Robot XL offers superior performance on a variety of surfaces when compared with the iRobot Roomba 690. It is also more easy to maintain and comes with a lower recurring cost. However, the iRobot is built better, runs faster while offering similar battery performance, and has an advanced suite of automation features that allows you to set up your home's coverage map to include no-go zones.

4. Eufy 11S

The Eufy 11S robot vacuum is perfect for those who do not want to use smartphones or voice commands but still want a robot that can clean according to their schedule. This slim robot is easy to set up and maintain and sucks up dust and dirt without much effort. It's best suited for cleaning light-duty daily to keep your floors looking their best.

It's not as impressive than the other top choices in our test program for vacuums, but it still offers some benefits that make it worth considering. For instance, its small stature lets it navigate under furniture with a low profile that other vacuums can't. It also has a very efficient 'Quick Clean' mode that uses multiple passes to make your floors as clean as you can. The "Smart Pathing" feature is not as effective, but still good enough to ensure that you don't repeat the same cleaning route over and over.

The model isn't quite as efficient as the iRobot Roomba S9+ but it performs better than the Coredy R550 which is about the same price as the Bobsweep Bob Pro. The iRobot is built better, incurs less recurring costs, has a bigger dirt compartment and lasts longer on charge, and can move more efficiently. It also removes pet hair faster and is more effective on floors that are carpeted and unfinished.

The Eufy 11S costs more than the iRobot Roomba, but also more than the Ecovacs N79S. However, the iRobot is more durable, has a longer maximum battery life, and soaks up more dust and dirt than the Eufy. It's also easier to maintain, has fewer cost-per-use charges, and comes with more automation features. The companion app is better, providing more useful information on the vacuum's battery level and status.

5. Ecovacs Deebot N8 Pro+

This robot vacuum may look similar to other vacuums available, but it has some unique tricks to play with. You can use the app to regulate the power levels as well as mops and set your preferences. Its suction power of 2600Pa is impressive and, at 67dB, it's much quieter in use than most other robots I've tested.

Deebot N8 Pro+ can also avoid obstacles using its TrueDetect 3D Laser. This technology makes use of structured lighting to map a room's interior and scan it. It is therefore able to work with shoes, furniture, charger cables, and showpieces. It's far more precise than other robots, too, since it works at a millimeter scale to recognize small objects and devise the best way to get around them.
